We all experience stress. Deadlines, family responsibilities, financial pressure — life can feel overwhelming at times.
But sometimes what we’re experiencing isn’t just stress. It might be anxiety.
Understanding the difference can help you know when it’s time to seek additional support.
What Is Stress?
Stress is usually connected to a specific situation or event. It often has a clear cause:
A busy week at work
A conflict in a relationship
An upcoming presentation
Health or financial concerns
Stress typically decreases once the situation improves or resolves.
What Is Anxiety?
Anxiety can feel similar — racing thoughts, tension, trouble sleeping — but it often lingers even when there isn’t a clear reason.
You might notice:
Constant “what if” thinking
Difficulty relaxing, even during downtime
Physical symptoms like chest tightness or stomach discomfort
Avoiding situations out of fear
Feeling on edge most days
Anxiety doesn’t always turn off when the stressful event passes.
When Should You Consider Therapy?
It may be time to talk with a counselor if:
Your worry feels hard to control
It’s affecting your sleep or relationships
You feel overwhelmed most days
You’ve tried coping strategies and still feel stuck
Therapy provides a safe, supportive space to explore what’s going on and learn tools that truly work for you.
You don’t have to wait until things feel unbearable. Support is helpful at any stage.
If you’re ready to talk, our counselors are here to help you take the next step toward feeling more grounded and supported.
